MLATs

MLAT stands for Multilateration. It is a surveillance technology used to determine the position of an aircraft or vehicle by measuring the time of arrival of signals from that aircraft or vehicle at multiple receiving stations. By knowing the precise location of the receivers and the time it takes for the signal to travel between them, the position of the source can be calculated.

MLAT systems typically operate by receiving signals that are already being transmitted by the aircraft, such as Mode S or ADS-B transponder signals. These signals contain identification information and can be used by the MLAT system to calculate the aircraft's position in three dimensions: latitude, longitude, and altitude. The accuracy of MLAT is dependent on the number and geometry of the receiving stations, as well as the quality of the received signals.

MLAT is widely used in air traffic control, particularly in areas where traditional radar coverage is limited or unavailable, such as in terminal areas, around busy airports, or over oceanic regions. It can also be employed for surface movement monitoring at airports, tracking vehicles on roads, or in various other surveillance applications. MLAT offers a cost-effective alternative to radar in many scenarios and can provide a higher update rate for tracking targets. It is an essential component of modern air traffic management systems, enhancing safety and efficiency.
