MAOentsyymien

MAOentsyymit, or monoamine oxidase enzymes, are a group of enzymes that catalyze the oxidation of amines, particularly monoamines. They are found in various tissues throughout the body, including the brain, liver, and intestines. MAO enzymes play a crucial role in the breakdown of neurotransmitters like serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine, as well as other monoamines such as tyramine.

There are two main forms of MAO: MAO-A and MAO-B. MAO-A primarily metabolizes serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine, while MAO-B preferentially breaks down dopamine and phenylethylamine. Both isoforms are involved in the metabolism of tyramine. The activity of MAO enzymes is essential for regulating neurotransmitter levels and maintaining proper physiological function.

Inhibitors of MAO enzymes, known as MAO inhibitors (MAOIs), have been developed and are used as medications, particularly for the treatment of depression and Parkinson's disease. By inhibiting MAO activity, these drugs can increase the levels of monoamine neurotransmitters in the brain, which can alleviate symptoms of these conditions. However, MAOIs can also interact with certain foods containing tyramine, leading to potentially dangerous increases in blood pressure. Therefore, individuals taking MAOIs must adhere to strict dietary restrictions.
