Mõõtmisstandarditele, known in English as "measurement standards," refers to the physical or material realization of a unit of measurement that has been given legal or official recognition. These standards are the fundamental basis for all measurements performed within a specific jurisdiction or field. They ensure consistency, comparability, and accuracy in all quantitative assessments.

The primary role of measurement standards is to provide a traceable reference. When a measurement is made, its result can be traced back to a recognized standard, allowing for verification and validation of the measurement's quality. This traceability is crucial for international trade, scientific research, industrial production, and consumer protection. Without common standards, the results of measurements would be meaningless, as they could not be compared or relied upon.

Measurement standards are typically maintained by national metrology institutes (NMIs) or designated bodies. These organizations are responsible for developing, maintaining, and disseminating the primary standards, which are the highest level of accuracy available. Secondary and working standards are then derived from these primary standards and are used in calibration laboratories and industries.

The development and evolution of measurement standards are guided by international agreements, primarily through the Bureau International des Poids et Mesures (BIPM). This ensures that measurement systems across the globe are harmonized, facilitating global commerce and scientific collaboration. Adherence to measurement standards is often mandated by law or regulation.
