Météo-France is the French national meteorological service. It is a public establishment placed under the supervision of the Ministry responsible for ecological transition. Its remit includes weather forecasting, climate monitoring, and the issuance of warnings for severe weather. It serves the general public as well as professional users in sectors such as aviation, maritime, agriculture, energy, and transportation, and it supports civil protection in managing weather‑related risks.

To fulfill its duties, Météo-France operates a national network of observation systems, including weather stations, radars, radiosondes, and satellites. It runs numerical weather prediction models and data assimilation systems to produce short- to medium-range forecasts and nowcasting. The organization also maintains climate databases, provides historical climate data, and conducts climate research and trend analyses.

It disseminates meteorological information through its website, media, and other public channels; it issues warnings and alerts, including severe weather warnings, to the public and authorities. On an international level, Météo-France participates in global and European meteorology networks and programs, sharing data with the World Meteorological Organization and collaborating with ECMWF and EUMETNET.

Historically, Météo-France emerged in the late 20th century from the consolidation of France’s meteorological services into a single national provider. It operates as an administrative public establishment and is financed by the state and through certain service activities.
