Løsningsmiddel, or solvent in English, is a substance that can dissolve a solute, resulting in a solution. Solvents are typically liquids, but can also be gases or solids. The ability of a solvent to dissolve a particular solute depends on the principle of "like dissolves like," meaning that polar solvents tend to dissolve polar solutes, and nonpolar solvents tend to dissolve nonpolar solutes. Water is a common polar solvent, capable of dissolving many ionic compounds and polar molecules. Organic solvents, such as ethanol and acetone, are often used for dissolving nonpolar substances like oils and greases.
