Lösungsmittelc is a term that broadly refers to the phenomenon of solvents. The ability of a solvent to dissolve a solute is determined by the principle of "like dissolves like." Volatile solvents evaporate easily at room temperature, whereas non-volatile solvents do not.

In the laboratory, solvents are essential for reactions, extractions, and chromatography. However, many solvents can be hazardous to human health and the environment, necessitating careful handling, proper disposal, and the development of greener, more sustainable alternatives.
