Længdeøgningen refers to the process of growth in length. In biological contexts, this typically pertains to the lengthening of the skeleton, particularly long bones, during development. This growth occurs at the epiphyseal plates, areas of cartilage located near the ends of long bones. These plates are responsible for producing new bone tissue, leading to an increase in bone length.

The rate of længdeøgning is influenced by a variety of factors. Hormones play a crucial role, with growth hormone, thyroid hormones, and sex hormones being particularly significant. Nutrition is also vital, as adequate intake of calcium, vitamin D, and protein is necessary for bone formation. Genetic predisposition determines the potential for height. Environmental factors, such as sleep and physical activity, can also contribute to optimal growth.

Længdeøgningen is most rapid during infancy and adolescence. In adolescence, the surge in sex hormones leads to a growth spurt. Following puberty, the epiphyseal plates eventually ossify, or turn into bone, marking the end of significant længdeøgning. This cessation of growth results in an individual reaching their final adult height. Disruptions to this process, such as hormonal imbalances or severe nutritional deficiencies, can lead to conditions like dwarfism or gigantism.
