Lämpötilavärähtely, known in English as temperature fluctuation or thermal fluctuation, refers to the random, spontaneous deviations of a system's temperature from its average value. These fluctuations are a fundamental consequence of the kinetic theory of matter, where particles within a system are in constant, random motion. This motion leads to a distribution of kinetic energies among the particles, and therefore, a variation in local temperatures.

In thermodynamic equilibrium, these fluctuations average out over time, resulting in a stable, measurable temperature. However, at any given instant, different parts of a system may have slightly different temperatures. The magnitude of these temperature fluctuations is inversely proportional to the size of the system and the heat capacity. Smaller systems and systems with lower heat capacities exhibit larger temperature fluctuations.

These phenomena are particularly significant at microscopic scales, such as in nanoscale devices, biological systems, and during phase transitions. For example, in Brownian motion, the random bombardment of a larger particle by smaller molecules causes it to move erratically, and this same random molecular motion underlies temperature fluctuations. Understanding temperature fluctuations is crucial for fields like statistical mechanics, condensed matter physics, and the design of sensitive scientific instruments, as they can influence the behavior and properties of materials and systems at very small scales.
