Lämpösiirrossa, often translated as heat transfer, is a fundamental concept in physics and engineering that describes the exchange of thermal energy between physical systems. This exchange occurs when there is a temperature difference between the systems. Heat naturally flows from a region of higher temperature to a region of lower temperature, aiming to reach thermal equilibrium.

There are three primary mechanisms by which heat transfer occurs: conduction, convection, and radiation. Conduction is the transfer of heat through direct contact, where thermal energy is passed from one molecule to another within a substance or between two substances in contact. This is most significant in solids. Convection involves heat transfer through the movement of fluids (liquids or gases). As a fluid is heated, it becomes less dense and rises, while cooler, denser fluid sinks, creating currents that distribute heat. Radiation is the transfer of heat through electromagnetic waves, such as infrared radiation, and does not require a medium. This is how the Sun's heat reaches Earth.

Understanding heat transfer is crucial in numerous applications. In engineering, it is essential for designing efficient heating and cooling systems, engines, and power plants. In everyday life, it explains phenomena like how a pot heats up on a stove, how wind cools a person, or how a room warms up from sunlight. The principles of heat transfer are governed by laws such as the laws of thermodynamics, particularly the second law, which dictates the direction of heat flow.
