Lämpöruiskutus, also known as thermal spraying, is a group of coating processes in which heated materials are sprayed onto a surface. These heated materials can be in the form of molten droplets, semi-molten particles, or vapor. The coating material, or feedstock, is typically in a powder, wire, or rod form. The heat source can be a combustion flame, an electric arc, or plasma. As the feedstock is introduced into the heat source, it melts and is accelerated towards the substrate. Upon impact, the particles rapidly cool and solidify, building up a coating layer by layer.

The primary purpose of thermal spraying is to impart specific properties to the substrate surface that it would not otherwise possess. These properties can include wear resistance, corrosion resistance, thermal insulation, electrical conductivity or insulation, and restoration of worn or damaged components. The versatility of thermal spraying allows for a wide range of materials to be deposited, including metals, alloys, ceramics, and polymers. The choice of thermal spraying process depends on factors such as the coating material, the desired coating properties, the substrate material, and the economic considerations. Common thermal spraying processes include flame spraying, arc spraying, plasma spraying, and high-velocity oxygen fuel (HVOF) spraying. Each process utilizes different methods for heating and propelling the coating material, leading to variations in particle velocity, temperature, and adhesion characteristics.
