Lämmönvarastat, meaning "heat storage" in Finnish, refers to the process and technology of storing thermal energy for later use. This is a crucial concept in energy efficiency and renewable energy systems, aiming to balance energy supply and demand. Heat can be stored in various mediums, including water, molten salts, phase change materials, and underground formations. The primary goal is to capture surplus heat generated at one time, often when energy is abundant or inexpensive, and release it when it is needed.

Different types of heat storage exist. Sensible heat storage involves raising or lowering the temperature of a storage medium. Water tanks are a common example, where heat is stored by increasing the water's temperature.
