Lysfølsomhed

Lysfølsomhed, also known as photophobia, is an abnormal intolerance to light. It is not a disease in itself but rather a symptom of an underlying condition. Individuals experiencing photophobia may feel discomfort or pain in their eyes when exposed to normal levels of light, particularly sunlight or bright artificial light. This sensitivity can range from mild annoyance to severe pain, often leading to squinting or closing the eyes.

The causes of lysfølsomhed are varied and can include a range of eye conditions such as migraines, dry eye syndrome, uveitis, conjunctivitis, keratitis, and certain retinal disorders. Neurological conditions like meningitis or subarachnoid hemorrhage can also manifest with photophobia. In some cases, it can be a side effect of certain medications or a symptom of prolonged screen time.

Diagnosis typically involves a medical professional assessing the patient's medical history, performing a physical examination of the eyes, and potentially conducting further tests to identify the root cause. Treatment strategies are directed at the underlying condition causing the light sensitivity. For instance, if dry eye is the cause, artificial tears or punctal plugs might be recommended. If a migraine is the trigger, managing the migraine itself is key. In the absence of a specific treatable cause, reducing light exposure through tinted glasses or avoiding bright environments can help manage the symptom.
