Luotonmyöntöön, or loan granting, is the process by which lenders decide whether to extend credit and under what terms. The aim is to assess risk and determine an appropriate price and repayment schedule that reflect the borrower's creditworthiness and the lender's risk tolerance.

The process typically begins with an application and the collection of information about income, employment, existing debt, and the purpose of the loan. Lenders perform an affordability assessment, check the borrower’s credit history through credit information agencies, and evaluate collateral where applicable. Based on these inputs, they model expected cash flows, set the interest rate, and decide on loan amount and term. Responsible lending rules require clear disclosure of costs and realistic assessments of repayment ability.

Common criteria include creditworthiness, income stability, debt-to-income ratio, repayment capacity, and, for secured loans, the value and quality of collateral. Borrowers with higher risk may receive counter-offers, reduced loan amounts, higher interest rates, or a rejection. In many markets, lenders use automated scoring alongside human review to balance speed with prudent risk management. Terms such as fees, repayment schedule, and potential penalties are communicated before finalizing the agreement.

Regulation shapes luotonmyöntöön through consumer protection, data privacy, and anti-money laundering requirements. In Finland, this activity is overseen by the Financial Supervisory Authority and aligned with EU banking directives. Borrowers retain rights to information, term comparison, and recourse in cases of error or unfair practices.
