Luomumerkki

Luomumerkki is the Finnish national label for organic products. It indicates that the product complies with the standards for organic farming and processing as defined by Finnish and EU legislation. The label is used on foods and other products that meet criteria.

The standards cover agricultural production, processing, and handling, prohibiting most synthetic pesticides and mineral fertilizers, synthetic additives, GMOs, irradiation, and the use of growth hormones. Feed must be organic where applicable. Producers must maintain documentation to demonstrate compliance with the required practices.

Certification is granted by approved bodies under the supervision of the Finnish authorities, historically Evira, now Ruokavirasto (Finnish Food Authority). Inspections occur on farms and facilities, and conformity is verified before products may bear the Luomumerkki. The label may appear alongside the EU organic logo; the latter is applicable throughout the EU, while Luomumerkki is the Finnish certification mark.

The Luomumerkki aims to provide consumer assurance about the authenticity of organic products in Finland, and it supports market differentiation for domestic organic producers. It exists within the broader EU organic framework and complements the universal EU logo where applicable.
