Lungfunktionstest

Lungfunktionstest, also known as pulmonary function testing (PFT), is a group of non-invasive tests that measure how well your lungs work. These tests assess lung volume, capacity, rates of flow, and gas exchange. The primary purpose of lung function tests is to diagnose and monitor lung diseases, such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and pulmonary fibrosis. They can also be used to evaluate the impact of certain medical conditions or treatments on lung health and to assess an individual's suitability for surgery.

The most common type of lung function test is spirometry. During spirometry, a person breathes into a device called a spirometer. The spirometer measures the amount of air inhaled and exhaled, as well as the speed at which the air is exhaled. Other PFTs may include lung volume measurements, which determine the total amount of air your lungs can hold, and diffusion capacity tests, which assess how efficiently oxygen and carbon dioxide move between the lungs and the bloodstream.

The results of lung function tests are compared to predicted values based on a person's age, sex, height, and race. Deviations from these predicted values can indicate the presence or severity of a lung condition. PFTs are generally safe, though some individuals might experience temporary lightheadedness or coughing. It is important to inform your doctor about any pre-existing conditions or medications you are taking before the test.
