Lugematud

Lugematud is an Estonian adjective form used to describe multiple items in two main senses: unreadable and uncountable, depending on context. It is the plural nominative form of lugematu, which derives from the verb lugema, meaning both to read and to count, with the negative suffix -matu. Because of this double origin, lugematu and its plural lugematud cover both legibility and quantification in different settings.

In everyday language, lugedatud contexts use lugematud to indicate that something cannot be read or is difficult to read. For example, lugematud dokumendid means unreadable documents, and lugematu tekst can refer to text that is illegible or poorly encoded. In mathematical or technical usage, the sense shifts toward uncountable or immeasurable, as in phrases like lugematu arv, which is used to discuss quantities that are not countable in a practical sense.

Lugematud shares its behavior with other Estonian adjectives: it does not function as a noun by itself but modifies a plural noun. The form changes with the noun it describes according to case and number, but lugematud remains the plural nominative from which other inflected forms are derived in sentences.
