Lohkeilla

Lohkeilla is a fictional archipelago used in speculative geography and worldbuilding. The term is presented as deriving from the archipelago’s imagined indigenous language, and is commonly interpreted as referring to the rugged coastlines that characterize the islands.

The chain comprises nine main islands and a multitude of islets, rocks, and sea stacks, spanning roughly 70 by 50 kilometers in total. The landscape is dominated by basalt cliffs, sea caves, and mossy plateaus, with inland gullies and a few freshwater lakes.

Ecology: The archipelago hosts several endemics adapted to rocky shorelines and persistent fog. Notable examples include the lohkeilla auk, a cliff-nesting seabird, and the basalt salamander, a lungless amphibian found in damp crevices. Vegetation is dominated by hardy shrubs, mosses, and conifers in higher areas.

History and politics: In the fiction, the islands were first charted during the early modern era by distant powers. They are currently administered as an autonomous district within a federated realm, with local councils managing fisheries, protected areas, and cultural heritage.

Economy and culture: The economy emphasizes small-scale fisheries, seaweed farming, and eco-tourism. Traditional navigation techniques, ropework, and ledge-crafting remain part of local identity, complemented by storytelling and boat-building traditions.
