Loftdráttur

Loftdráttur is an Icelandic term that translates to "air pull" or "air draft." It refers to the phenomenon of air moving through a space, often associated with ventilation or unintended leakage. In a literal sense, loftdráttur describes the movement of air currents within a building or other enclosed environment. This can be a natural occurrence, such as when warm air rises and cooler air descends, creating convection currents. It can also be a result of deliberate ventilation systems designed to exchange indoor and outdoor air.

However, loftdráttur is also frequently used to describe undesirable air leakage. This can happen through cracks, gaps, or openings in the building envelope, such as around windows, doors, or in the roof and wall structures. Such unintended air movement can lead to discomfort due to cold drafts, reduced energy efficiency as heated or cooled air escapes, and potential moisture issues within the building structure. Understanding and managing loftdráttur is therefore an important aspect of building science and energy conservation, particularly in colder climates where maintaining indoor temperatures is crucial.
