Ljósstyrkur is an Icelandic term that translates to luminous intensity in English. It is a fundamental photometric measure of the wavelength-weighted power emitted by a light source in a particular direction, per unit solid angle. Essentially, it describes how bright a light source appears to the human eye from a specific viewpoint.

The SI unit for luminous intensity is the candela (cd). One candela is defined as the luminous intensity, in a given direction, of a source that emits monochromatic radiation of frequency 540 × 10^12 hertz and that has a radiant intensity in that direction of 1/683 watt per steradian. This definition is based on the sensitivity of the human eye to different wavelengths of light, peaking in the green-yellow region of the spectrum.

Ljósstyrkur is crucial in various applications, including lighting design, photography, and astronomy.
