Liturgisena

Liturgisena is a Finnish linguistic form meaning “as liturgical” or “in the capacity of liturgical.” It is the essive case form of the adjective liturginen, used to describe something that functions within the liturgy or is characterized by a liturgical nature. The root derives from liturgia, a term that in Finnish comes through liturgia from Latin liturgia and Greek leitourgia, reflecting the religious origins of the word.

In usage, liturgisena appears in theological and ecclesiastical writing to specify the liturgical character of a text, action, or object. It can modify nouns in constructions such as liturgisena asiana (as a liturgical matter), liturgisena toimituksena (as a liturgical rite/service), or liturgisena käytäntönä (as a liturgical practice). It contrasts with forms such as liturginen (the attributive adjective) or liturgisesti (adverbially).

Compared to other languages, Finnish employs the essive -na/-nä to mark a state or role, so liturgisena signals function within a worship context rather than broader secular use. In scholarly contexts, the term helps distinguish aspects that are specifically tied to official worship forms from general religious practice.
