Lipotes

Lipotes is a genus of freshwater dolphins that historically inhabited the Yangtze River in China. The only known species within this genus is Lipotes vexillifer, commonly known as the Yangtze river dolphin or baiji. This cetacean is characterized by its long, narrow snout, small eyes, and a distinct dorsal fin. For centuries, the baiji was a prominent feature of the Yangtze River ecosystem, playing a role in local folklore and culture.

However, in recent decades, the population of Lipotes vexillifer has experienced a catastrophic decline. The primary drivers of this decline are attributed to human activities along the Yangtze River. These include overfishing, bycatch in fishing gear, habitat degradation due to dam construction and increasing river traffic, and pollution. Intensive industrialization and agricultural runoff have significantly impacted the water quality, further stressing the dolphin population.

Despite extensive conservation efforts, including protected reserves and attempts at captive breeding, the baiji has proven incredibly difficult to save. Surveys conducted in the early 21st century failed to locate any individuals, leading to widespread concerns about its extinction. In 2006, an expedition declared the species functionally extinct, meaning the remaining population, if any, is too small to survive. In 2008, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) listed the baiji as critically endangered, effectively extinct. The story of Lipotes vexillifer serves as a stark warning about the impact of human activities on aquatic biodiversity.
