Linjebalansering, often translated as line balancing or production line balancing, is a technique used in manufacturing and production to organize tasks within a work cell or assembly line. The primary goal is to distribute the workload as evenly as possible among workstations to achieve a smooth and efficient flow of production. This is crucial for maximizing output and minimizing idle time for both workers and machines.

The process typically begins by identifying all the individual tasks required to produce a product. These tasks are then analyzed to determine their duration and the order in which they must be performed, often represented in a precedence diagram. The next step involves grouping these tasks into workstations. The key challenge is to assign tasks to each station such that the total time required at each station, known as the cycle time, is as close as possible to the desired takt time. Takt time is the rate at which products need to be completed to meet customer demand.

Effective linjebalansering aims to equalize workload, reduce bottlenecks, and ensure that each station has a similar amount of work. This can lead to improved productivity, reduced lead times, lower work-in-progress inventory, and a more consistent product quality.
