Ligandvolatile is a term used in coordination chemistry and catalysis to describe ligands that readily volatilize from metal centers under modest heating, reduced pressure, or during gas-phase processing. The concept is used to describe ligands that can be removed without breaking the metal framework or requiring harsh reagents, enabling clean ligand exchange, purification, or vapor-phase deposition.

Typical ligands considered volatile include simple neutral molecules with significant vapor pressure at or near ambient temperature, such as carbon monoxide, acetonitrile (CH3CN), and certain phosphines and carbonyl ligands that can dissociate under heating. In practice, a broader class may include ligands that, when bound to an organometallic fragment, impart sufficient lability to permit volatilization of the entire complex or the ligand itself under controlled conditions. Important properties include high vapor pressure, limited thermal stability when bound, and compatibility with the metal center and reaction conditions.

Applications encompass synthesis and purification of metal complexes via sublimation or distillation, and the preparation of volatile precursors for chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and atomic layer deposition (ALD). By using ligandvolatile ligands, researchers can remove ligands in situ to generate active catalytic species or cleanly isolate intermediates. Limitations include potential uncontrolled decomposition, sensitivity to air and moisture, and safety concerns due to toxicity of many volatile ligands (e.g., CO, phosphines).

Assessment of such ligands relies on techniques like thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and vapor-pressure measurements, as well as monitoring under vacuum or inert gas. While not a standard term, ligandvolatile serves as a descriptive label for ligands whose volatility facilitates specific synthetic or processing goals in organometallic chemistry.
