The interaction between a ligand and its corresponding receptor is highly specific, often compared to a lock and key mechanism, where the ligand is the key that fits into the receptor's binding site.

When a ligand binds to a ligand-gated receptor, it induces a conformational change in the receptor's structure. This change can lead to a cascade of intracellular events. In the case of ion channel receptors, ligand binding can directly open or close a channel, altering the flow of ions across the cell membrane. This ion flux is crucial for processes like nerve impulse transmission and muscle contraction.

Other ligand-gated receptors are coupled to intracellular signaling pathways. Upon ligand binding, these receptors can activate or inhibit enzymes, recruit other proteins, or trigger the release of secondary messengers.
