Lidspaltes

Lidspaltes refers to the visible opening between the upper and lower eyelids when the eye is open. This aperture is a key feature of the ocular region and plays a crucial role in vision by allowing light to enter the eye and reach the retina. The size and shape of the lidspaltes can vary significantly among individuals and can also be influenced by factors such as age, ethnicity, and certain medical conditions.

The muscles of the eyelids, specifically the levator palpebrae superioris muscle which lifts the upper eyelid, and the orbicularis oculi muscle which closes the eyelids, directly control the widening and narrowing of the lidspaltes. In a relaxed state, the lidspaltes typically expose a portion of the iris. Changes in the lidspaltes can be indicative of underlying health issues. For example, a drooping upper eyelid, known as ptosis, can reduce the size of the lidspaltes and obstruct vision. Conversely, conditions like exophthalmos, characterized by protruding eyeballs, can result in an abnormally wide lidspaltes.
