Lichtreaktive

Lichtreaktive is a German term that translates to "light-reactive" in English. It describes materials or substances that undergo a change in their physical or chemical properties when exposed to light. This phenomenon is utilized in various applications, from everyday technologies to specialized industrial processes.

A common example of light-reactive materials is photochromic glass, often found in sunglasses. These lenses darken when exposed to ultraviolet (UV) light from the sun, becoming lighter again in dimmer conditions. This reaction is due to the presence of specific chemical compounds that reversibly change their molecular structure upon light absorption.

Another important area is photolithography, a process crucial in the manufacturing of semiconductors and microchips. Here, light-reactive materials called photoresists are used. When exposed to specific patterns of light, these resists either become soluble or insoluble in a developer solution, allowing for the precise etching of intricate designs onto silicon wafers.

In the field of photography, light-sensitive materials have been fundamental since the invention of the camera. Silver halide crystals in photographic film undergo chemical changes when struck by photons, forming a latent image that can then be developed into a visible photograph. This principle, though largely superseded by digital technology, laid the groundwork for much of modern imaging.
