Lexía

Lexía is a term that appears in some Spanish-language discussions of linguistics and language studies. It is formed from the Greek lexis, meaning “word” or “speech,” combined with the suffix -ía, used to denote fields of study or systematic knowledge. Because it is not standardized in major dictionaries, its precise meaning varies across authors and contexts.

In its broadest sense, lexía is used to denote aspects of lexical knowledge or the study of words. Some authors treat lexía as the mental representation of a word in the mental lexicon, including its morphological, syntactic, semantic, and phonological properties. Others use lexía to refer to the collection of lexical entries in a language—the externally stored vocabulary—distinguishing it from the abstract notion of a single unit like a lexeme. In this view, lexía lies at the intersection of vocabulary (the set of stored words) and lexical access (how those words are retrieved during use).

Relation to related terms can vary by author. Lexía is sometimes described as related to, or even synonymous with, the concept of a lexeme, or as a field focusing on the organization and access of lexical entries, distinct from broader notions of the lexicon or lexical semantics. Because of its inconsistent usage, many linguists favor more established terms such as lexicon, lexeme, or mental lexicon to describe similar ideas.
