Leasturbanized refers to areas with the lowest proportion of their population living in urban settlements. This is typically measured by the urban percentage, which is the ratio of the urban population to the total population. Countries or regions with low urbanization rates often have a significant portion of their population residing in rural areas, engaging in agriculture or other non-urban economic activities.

Factors influencing low urbanization include a strong agrarian economy, limited industrial development, insufficient urban infrastructure, and a preference for traditional rural lifestyles. Historically, most of the world was leasturbanized, with a predominantly rural population. However, global trends show a consistent increase in urbanization over the past century, driven by economic opportunities in cities, migration, and population growth.

Conversely, highly urbanized areas have a large majority of their population living in cities and towns. The definition of what constitutes an urban area can vary by country, often based on population density, administrative boundaries, or the presence of non-agricultural economic activities. Nevertheless, the concept of leasturbanized areas highlights the significant portion of the global population that remains outside of major urban centers.
