The survival rate of avalanche victims decreases rapidly with the duration of burial. Immediate rescue efforts are critical. Search and rescue operations typically involve both trained professionals and, in many cases, fellow skiers or hikers who witness the avalanche. Tools such as avalanche transceivers, probes, and shovels are essential for locating and excavating buried individuals. Avalanche transceivers emit a radio signal that can be detected by other transceivers, allowing rescuers to pinpoint the location of a buried victim. Probes are then used to confirm the exact position, and shovels are used for the physical removal of snow.

Preventing avalanche burial involves careful route selection, checking avalanche forecasts, carrying appropriate safety equipment, and having knowledge of avalanche safety practices. Understanding snowpack conditions, terrain, and weather patterns are key elements in risk assessment. Education and preparedness are vital for anyone venturing into avalanche-prone areas.
