Lavreotiki

Lavreotiki, or Λαυρεωτική in Greek, is a regional unit of Greece within the Attica region. It lies along the eastern coast of the Attica peninsula, facing the Saronic Gulf. The regional unit includes the historic port town of Lavrio and notable coastal areas, including the southern cape region associated with Cape Sounion.

Geography and notable features include coastal plains and hilly terrain that run toward the Aegean. The southern tip of the area contains Cape Sounion, the site of the Temple of Poseidon, a major archaeological and tourist destination connected by road to Athens. The Laurion (Laurium) area, known since antiquity for its mineral resources, forms a central element of the region’s landscape and historical identity.

History and cultural heritage are dominated by the Laurion silver mines, which supplied wealth to ancient Athens and influenced broader Mediterranean trade. The mining district continued to affect the area through later periods, and in modern times the mining heritage is preserved in museums and historic sites. The mining past shaped the development of Lavrio as a port and industrial center, a pattern reflected in local architecture and cultural institutions.

Economy and administration today reflect a mix of maritime activity, tourism, and services tied to the region’s natural and historical assets.
