Lauhduttimissa, or condensers in English, are devices used to transfer heat from a working fluid to another medium, typically a cooler fluid or the ambient air. This process causes the working fluid to change its state, usually from a gas to a liquid. Condensers are integral components in various refrigeration, air conditioning, and power generation systems.

The primary function of a condenser is to remove latent heat of vaporization from a substance. In a refrigeration cycle, for example, a hot refrigerant gas flows into the condenser. Here, it is exposed to a cooler environment, which absorbs heat from the refrigerant. As the refrigerant loses heat, it condenses into a high-pressure liquid. This liquid then proceeds to the next stage of the refrigeration cycle.

Condensers can be broadly categorized by the cooling medium they employ. Air-cooled condensers utilize ambient air to dissipate heat. These are common in residential air conditioning units and smaller refrigeration systems. Water-cooled condensers use water as the cooling medium. These are often found in larger industrial applications and power plants, where water is readily available and can efficiently remove large amounts of heat. Evaporative condensers combine the principles of both air and water cooling, using the evaporation of water to enhance the cooling process.

The design and efficiency of a condenser are crucial for the overall performance of the system it is part of. Factors such as surface area, airflow or water flow rate, and the temperature difference between the working fluid and the cooling medium significantly impact its effectiveness. Proper maintenance, including cleaning and ensuring unobstructed airflow or water flow, is essential to maintain optimal condenser performance.
