Lagringshierarkin

Lagringshierarkin, or the storage hierarchy, refers to the tiered structure of computer storage devices arranged by speed, cost, and capacity. This hierarchy is designed to optimize performance and cost-effectiveness by placing frequently accessed data on faster, more expensive storage and less frequently accessed data on slower, cheaper storage.

At the top of the hierarchy are CPU registers, which are the fastest but have very limited capacity. Next are CPU caches (L1, L2, L3), which are also very fast and store frequently used instructions and data. Following the cache is main memory, or RAM, which is slower than cache but offers a much larger capacity.

Below main memory are various levels of secondary storage, typically solid-state drives (SSDs) and hard disk drives (HDDs). SSDs offer significantly faster access times than HDDs and are often used for operating systems, applications, and active data. HDDs provide higher capacity at a lower cost and are suitable for storing large files, backups, and archival data.

At the bottom of the hierarchy are tertiary and archival storage, such as magnetic tape or cloud storage. These are the slowest and cheapest options, primarily used for long-term data retention and disaster recovery. The goal of the storage hierarchy is to provide the illusion of a large, fast storage system by strategically moving data between these different levels.
