LNGsäiliöaluksiin refers to vessels designed for the transportation of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG). These specialized ships are crucial for the global energy trade, enabling the movement of LNG from production sites to consumption markets worldwide. The primary function of an LNG carrier is to maintain the natural gas in a liquid state, which requires extremely low temperatures, typically around -162 degrees Celsius (-260 degrees Fahrenheit).

To achieve and maintain these cryogenic temperatures, LNGsäiliöaluksiin are equipped with highly sophisticated and insulated cargo containment systems. The most common types of containment systems are Moss Rosenberg spherical tanks and membrane tanks. Moss Rosenberg tanks are self-supporting, spherical structures, while membrane tanks are integrated into the hull structure of the ship and are lined with a thin, yet robust, barrier material.

The design and operation of these vessels are subject to stringent safety regulations due to the flammable nature of LNG and the extreme temperatures involved. Boil-off gas, which naturally evaporates from the LNG, can be reliquefied, used as fuel for the ship's propulsion, or discharged.
