Löslichkeitsprodukte, often abbreviated as Ksp, are a type of equilibrium constant that describes the maximum concentration of ions that can dissolve in a solution from a sparingly soluble ionic compound. When an ionic solid is placed in a solvent, such as water, a dynamic equilibrium is established between the undissolved solid and its dissolved ions. For a general salt A_mX_n, the dissolution process can be represented by the equilibrium equation: A_mX_n(s) <=> mA^(n+)(aq) + nX^(m-)(aq).

The solubility product constant, Ksp, is defined as the product of the molar concentrations of the dissolved ions, each raised to the power of its stoichiometric coefficient in the balanced dissolution equation. Therefore, for A_mX_n, Ksp = [A^(n+)]^m * [X^(m-)]^n. The value of Ksp is temperature-dependent.

A low Ksp value indicates that the compound has low solubility in the solvent. If the product of the ion concentrations in a solution exceeds the Ksp value, precipitation will occur until the ion product equals the Ksp. Conversely, if the ion product is less than the Ksp, the compound will continue to dissolve until the Ksp is reached or all the solid has dissolved.
