Lõivumaksud

Lõivumaksud refers to a historical type of tax levied in Estonia and Livonia. These were typically fixed monetary payments or payments in kind, often levied on agricultural produce. The specific nature and amount of lõivumaksud varied significantly depending on the time period, the region, and the feudal lord or authority collecting the tax.

Historically, these taxes were a significant part of the economic system in the Baltic region, particularly during the period of German feudal rule. They were imposed on the peasantry as a form of rent or obligation for the land they cultivated. The payments could be made in grain, livestock, or other valuable goods, in addition to monetary sums. The purpose of collecting lõivumaksud was to support the landowning nobility, the church, and the state administration.
