LänsiSaharaa

LänsiSaharaa, also known as Western Sahara, is a disputed territory located on the northwest coast of Africa. It is bordered by Morocco to the north, Algeria to the northeast, Mauritania to the east and south, and the Atlantic Ocean to the west. The territory is largely desert, with a population concentrated along the coast and in a few oases.

The region has a complex political status. Morocco claims sovereignty over LänsiSaharaa and administers most of the territory, including its major cities and natural resources. However, the Polisario Front, a Sahrawi liberation movement, has declared the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) in the eastern part of the territory, which it claims as an independent state. The SADR is recognized by several African Union member states and has observer status in the United Nations.

The dispute over LänsiSaharaa began in 1975 after Spain withdrew from its former colony. A United Nations-brokered ceasefire was established in 1991, with a planned referendum on self-determination that has yet to take place. The conflict has resulted in a significant Sahrawi refugee population living in camps in Algeria. LänsiSaharaa is rich in phosphate deposits and potentially holds offshore oil reserves, making its resources a significant factor in the ongoing dispute. The international community's stance on LänsiSaharaa remains divided, with many countries either supporting Moroccan claims, recognizing the SADR, or calling for a peaceful resolution through negotiation.
