LänsiBerliinis refers to West Berlin, the part of the city that was not under Soviet control during the Cold War. Following World War II, Berlin was divided into four sectors, with the United States, United Kingdom, and France administering West Berlin, and the Soviet Union controlling East Berlin. This division solidified into a political and ideological boundary after the Berlin Wall was erected in 1961.

West Berlin became a democratic enclave surrounded by communist East Germany. Its existence was a constant point of contention and a symbol of the ideological struggle between the Western powers and the Soviet bloc. Despite its isolated geographical position, West Berlin thrived as a vibrant city, developing its own distinct culture and economy. It was a center for arts, music, and progressive social movements.
