Lämpötilanmittalaitteella, known in English as a thermometer, is an instrument used to measure temperature. These devices operate on various physical principles, the most common being the thermal expansion of liquids or solids, the change in electrical resistance of a material with temperature, or the emission of infrared radiation.

A common type of thermometer is the liquid-in-glass thermometer, which typically uses mercury or alcohol encased in a sealed glass tube. As the temperature rises, the liquid expands and rises up the calibrated tube, indicating the temperature. Conversely, a drop in temperature causes the liquid to contract and fall.

Digital thermometers, on the other hand, utilize electronic sensors. Thermistors, for instance, change their electrical resistance significantly with temperature, and this change is converted into a digital reading displayed on a screen. Infrared thermometers measure the thermal radiation emitted by an object, allowing for non-contact temperature measurement.

Thermometers are essential tools across many fields, including meteorology for weather forecasting, medicine for monitoring body temperature, industry for process control, and in everyday household use for cooking and environmental monitoring. The accuracy and range of a thermometer depend on its design and the specific sensing technology employed. Calibration is crucial to ensure accurate readings.
