Külmumispunktiks refers to the specific temperature at which a liquid transitions into a solid state. This phenomenon is governed by the intermolecular forces within the substance. As a liquid cools, its molecules lose kinetic energy and move more slowly. When the temperature reaches the freezing point, these molecules arrange themselves into a more ordered, crystalline structure, forming a solid. For pure substances, the freezing point is a characteristic and constant property. For example, pure water freezes at 0 degrees Celsius (32 degrees Fahrenheit) at standard atmospheric pressure.

The presence of impurities in a liquid can affect its freezing point, a phenomenon known as freezing point depression. Dissolving a solute into a solvent typically lowers the solvent's freezing point. This occurs because the solute particles interfere with the formation of the solvent's crystal lattice, requiring a lower temperature for solidification to begin. This principle is utilized in various applications, such as using salt to de-ice roads in winter. The salt dissolves in any available water, lowering its freezing point and preventing it from turning into ice, or melting existing ice.

The concept of freezing point is also relevant in understanding phase diagrams, which graphically represent the conditions of temperature and pressure under which different phases of a substance exist. The freezing point line on a phase diagram indicates the boundary between the liquid and solid phases.
