Külmumispunktiga refers to the temperature at which a substance transitions from a liquid to a solid state. This point is characteristic of each specific substance and is a fundamental physical property. For water, the freezing point is 0 degrees Celsius (32 degrees Fahrenheit) at standard atmospheric pressure.

The freezing point of a liquid can be influenced by the presence of dissolved substances. For example, adding salt to water lowers its freezing point, a phenomenon known as freezing point depression. This is why salt is often used on roads in winter to prevent ice formation. The more solute dissolved in the solvent, the lower the freezing point will be.

This principle is also utilized in various applications, such as antifreeze in car radiators. Antifreeze, typically a mixture of ethylene glycol and water, significantly lowers the freezing point of the coolant, preventing the engine from freezing and sustaining damage in cold weather.

The freezing point is an equilibrium temperature, meaning that at this specific temperature, the liquid and solid phases of a substance can coexist in a state of dynamic balance. At temperatures below the freezing point, the substance will exist entirely in its solid form, while at temperatures above the freezing point, it will be in its liquid form. Precise measurement of the freezing point is a common method for identifying and determining the purity of substances.
