Kõneprotsessid refers to the complex cognitive and physiological mechanisms involved in the production and comprehension of spoken language. These processes encompass a range of activities from the initial formulation of thought into linguistic units to the physical articulation of sounds and the subsequent interpretation of these sounds by a listener.

The production of speech begins with conceptualization, where an idea or message is formed. This is followed by formulation, which involves selecting appropriate words and arranging them into grammatically correct sentences, a process known as linguistic encoding. Finally, the motor planning and execution of speech occur, where the brain sends signals to the muscles of the vocal tract, including the tongue, lips, and larynx, to produce the intended sounds. This articulation involves precise coordination of these muscles to create phonemes, the basic sound units of language.

Speech comprehension, on the other hand, involves auditory processing, where the incoming sound waves are converted into neural signals. These signals are then sent to the brain for phonological decoding, where the acoustic patterns are recognized as speech sounds. Lexical access follows, allowing the listener to retrieve the meaning of the words heard. Finally, syntactic and semantic processing integrate the meaning of individual words into a coherent understanding of the entire message, taking into account grammatical structure and context. Deficits in any of these stages can lead to various speech and language disorders.
