Käynnistystiedostot, known in English as boot files or startup files, are essential components of a computer's operating system. These files contain the instructions necessary for the computer to load and initialize the operating system after it is powered on. When a computer is turned on, the Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) or Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) first executes. This firmware then searches for a bootable device, such as a hard drive or SSD. Once a bootable device is found, the firmware loads the bootloader from a designated area, typically the Master Boot Record (MBR) or GUID Partition Table (GPT) on the storage device. The bootloader's primary role is to locate and load the operating system kernel and other critical startup files into memory. These files include the kernel itself, drivers for essential hardware, and configuration files that dictate how the operating system should start. The sequence of loading these files is crucial for a successful system startup. If any of these boot files are corrupted or missing, the computer may fail to start, leading to errors such as a "boot failure" message or a frozen screen. Different operating systems have their own specific sets of käynnistystiedostot. For example, Windows uses files like BOOTMGR and BCD, while Linux distributions rely on bootloaders like GRUB or LILO. Understanding the function of these files is important for system administration and troubleshooting boot-related issues.
