Käsitteitäistö is a Finnish term that translates to "concept lattice" or "concept hierarchy" in English. It is a mathematical structure used in formal concept analysis (FCA) to represent the relationships between objects and their attributes. In essence, a concept lattice organizes concepts, where each concept is defined by a set of objects that share common attributes and a set of attributes that are common to those objects.

The structure of a concept lattice is a partially ordered set, forming a lattice. This means that for any two concepts, there is a unique greatest lower bound (join) and a unique least upper bound (meet). This ordering reflects the "is-a" or "is-a-kind-of" relationship between concepts. A concept that is higher in the lattice possesses more general attributes (fewer specific objects) than a concept lower down, which has more specific attributes (more specific objects).

Concept lattices are generated from a data table, often called a context, which lists objects and the attributes they possess. The process of generating the lattice involves identifying all possible concepts and their relationships based on this context. This mathematical representation allows for the discovery of hidden patterns and structures within data.

Applications of concept lattices are found in various fields, including data mining, information retrieval, knowledge discovery, and machine learning. They can be used to classify data, find associations between attributes, and build ontologies or taxonomies.
