Kärnröret

Kärnröret, sometimes translated as "core tube" or "kernel tube," is a conceptual element often found in discussions related to projectile design, particularly in the context of kinetic energy penetrators. It refers to the central, often densest, part of a penetrator rod that is designed to withstand the extreme stresses of impact and penetration.

The primary function of the kärnröret is to maintain structural integrity during high-velocity impact. As a projectile strikes a hard target, immense forces are generated. The kärnröret is typically made from a very hard and tough material, such as tungsten alloy or depleted uranium, chosen for its ability to resist deformation and fracture. This central core provides the backbone for the penetrator, preventing it from shattering or breaking apart prematurely.

Surrounding the kärnröret, there might be other components such as a discarding sabot, which stabilizes the penetrator during flight and is shed upon reaching the target, or a jacket designed to reduce friction and wear within the gun barrel. However, the kärnröret itself is the part that directly engages with and perforates the target. Its effectiveness is a critical factor in the overall performance of kinetic energy penetrators, determining their ability to defeat armor. The design and material selection of the kärnröret are therefore paramount in the development of advanced ordnance.
