Käedkast

Käedkast is a term originating from Estonian that literally translates to "handbox" or "glove box." It refers to a type of sealed enclosure that is used to handle materials that are hazardous, sensitive, or require a controlled atmosphere. These enclosures are designed with one or more pairs of glove ports, allowing users to manipulate the contents inside without direct contact.

The primary function of a käedkast is to isolate its interior from the external environment. This isolation is crucial for various applications. For instance, in laboratories, käedkasts are employed when working with highly toxic chemicals, radioactive isotopes, or extremely reactive substances that would degrade in the presence of air or moisture. They can also be used to maintain an inert atmosphere, such as nitrogen or argon, which is essential for certain chemical synthesis processes or for preserving delicate samples.

Käedkasts can range in complexity and size. Simple versions might be made from plastic and used for basic containment, while more sophisticated models, often referred to as gloveboxes, are constructed from metal and equipped with specialized features like gas purification systems, vacuum capabilities, and viewing windows.
