Kylmäaistimukset, also known as cold sensations or cold feelings, refer to the subjective perception of coldness. This sensation is a crucial aspect of thermoreception, the sense that allows organisms to detect and respond to temperature changes in their environment and internal body. When the skin's temperature drops, specialized sensory receptors called thermoreceptors, specifically cold receptors, are activated. These receptors are primarily free nerve endings found throughout the epidermis and dermis.

Upon activation, cold receptors generate nerve impulses that are transmitted along sensory pathways to the spinal cord and then up to the brain, specifically to the somatosensory cortex. In the brain, these signals are interpreted as the sensation of cold. The intensity of the perceived coldness depends on several factors, including the actual temperature of the stimulus, the rate of temperature change, the duration of exposure, and individual differences in sensitivity.
