Kylmäplasman

Kylmäplasma, also known as non-thermal plasma or low-temperature plasma, is a state of matter similar to conventional plasma but with a significantly lower bulk temperature. In this unique state, electrons are much hotter than ions and neutral particles. This difference in temperature allows for chemical reactions and biological interactions to occur without causing substantial thermal damage to sensitive materials or living tissues.

The generation of kylmäplasma typically involves ionizing a gas, such as air, nitrogen, or helium, using an electrical discharge. This discharge can take various forms, including dielectric barrier discharges (DBD), corona discharges, or radiofrequency (RF) discharges. The energetic electrons in the plasma collide with gas molecules, creating reactive species like free radicals, ions, and excited molecules. These reactive species are the primary agents responsible for the effects observed in kylmäplasma applications.

Kylmäplasma has found a diverse range of applications across various fields. In medicine, it is used for sterilization of medical equipment, wound healing, and dermatological treatments due to its antimicrobial properties and ability to promote cell proliferation without excessive heat. In industry, it is employed for surface modification of materials, such as polymers and textiles, to improve adhesion, wettability, and biocompatibility. Environmental applications include air and water purification, where kylmäplasma can break down pollutants and neutralize harmful substances. Research is also ongoing into its potential use in agriculture for seed treatment and crop protection.
