Kvaternaarne, also known as "quarternair" or "quarternary," refers to a historical and cultural tradition found primarily in parts of Scandinavia, particularly Norway, where a young couple would stay with a host family for a period of time after their wedding. The practice originated as a way to help newlyweds establish themselves financially and socially while integrating into the community.

The term "kvaternaarne" comes from the Norwegian word "kvater," meaning "godparent" or "sponsor," and "naarne," which translates to "year" or "time." Traditionally, the couple would live with the host family for a year, though the duration could vary. During this time, the host family provided lodging, food, and sometimes financial support in exchange for labor, such as farming or household chores. In return, the couple would offer hospitality to guests, contribute to the household, and often bring gifts or favors to the host family upon departure.

This custom was particularly common among rural populations and served multiple purposes. It helped young couples avoid the financial strain of starting a household immediately, provided them with mentorship from experienced adults, and strengthened social bonds within the community. Kvaternaarne also played a role in reinforcing kinship networks, as the host family was often chosen based on familial or friendship ties.

Over time, the tradition declined as economic conditions improved and modern living standards reduced the need for such arrangements.
