Kvartäärirakenteet

Kvartäärirakenteet refers to the geological structures and deposits formed during the Quaternary period, which spans from approximately 2.6 million years ago to the present. This period is characterized by significant climatic fluctuations, most notably the repeated glaciations and interglacial periods. These climatic changes have profoundly shaped the Earth's surface, leading to the formation of distinctive landforms and sedimentary sequences.

In glacial environments, key kvartäärirakenteet include moraines, eskers, kames, and outwash plains, all deposited by moving glaciers. Moraines are ridges of till deposited at the edges or base of a glacier, while eskers are long, winding ridges formed by meltwater streams flowing within or beneath the ice. Kames are irregular mounds of sand and gravel, and outwash plains are broad areas of stratified drift deposited by meltwater. In contrast, interglacial periods often see the development of fluvial (river) and lacustrine (lake) deposits, as well as soil formation.

Periglacial processes, which occur in regions adjacent to glaciers but not directly covered by ice, also create characteristic kvartäärirakenteet. These include patterned ground (such as polygons and circles), solifluction lobes, and pingos (ice-cored hills). Aeolian processes, driven by wind, contribute to the formation of sand dunes and loess deposits, particularly in drier regions or during periods of glacial retreat when vast areas of exposed sediment were available. The study of kvartäärirakenteet is crucial for understanding past climates, landscape evolution, and resource distribution.
