Kvanttijäristykset

Kvanttijäristykset, or quantum fluctuations, are temporary, random changes in the amount of energy in a point in space. These fluctuations are a direct consequence of the Heisenberg uncertainty principle, which states that certain pairs of physical properties, like position and momentum, or energy and time, cannot be known with perfect accuracy simultaneously. Even in a vacuum, where the average energy is zero, there are brief moments where energy can momentarily become non-zero.

These tiny, fleeting changes are not just theoretical curiosities; they have observable consequences. For instance, quantum fluctuations are believed to play a crucial role in the formation of elementary particles and are thought to be the seeds from which the large-scale structure of the universe, such as galaxies, originated during the inflationary period shortly after the Big Bang. They are also responsible for phenomena like the Casimir effect, where two uncharged conductive plates placed very close together experience an attractive force due to the difference in vacuum energy between the plates and the outside.
